Gateway Engineer - Infrastructure Engineer

Department of Defence (via ASD) | RAAF Edinburgh, SA | Onsite

Working Arrangement

Onsite at RAAF Edinburgh. Some flexibility may exist, but this role is primarily onsite due to operational requirements.

Clearance required

Current TSPV clearance required

Company overview

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) sits at the centre of Australia's cyber and intelligence capability.

They defend against global threats, run foreign signals intelligence, and deliver offensive cyber operations when required.

What this really means is the work here is high-stakes, real-world, and directly tied to national security.

Job Description

This role exists to strengthen and support critical network infrastructure within a secure Defence environment.

You won't just be maintaining systems. You'll be designing, improving, and securing infrastructure that needs to perform under pressure.

If you like solving complex network problems, digging into incidents, and working in environments where reliability actually matters, you'll fit in well here.

Duties and Responsibilities

What you'll actually be doing:

  • Maintain and support network components aligned to agreed architectures and standards
  • Translate logical designs into physical implementations that meet performance and capacity needs
  • Contribute to network design options, including alternative topologies and architectures
  • Identify risks in technical designs and put practical mitigation strategies in place
  • Support incident response, including investigating suspected attacks
  • Help develop recovery procedures and contingency plans
  • Provide guidance on applying security controls across infrastructure
  • Improve operational processes rather than just following them

Education/Certifications required

  • Relevant degree in IT, networking, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Industry certifications (Cisco, Juniper, etc.) are useful but not essential if experience is strong

Knowledge/Skills required

We're not looking for a checklist. This is what actually matters:

  • Strong experience working with network and infrastructure environments (physical, virtual, or hybrid)
  • Solid understanding of network design and implementation principles
  • Experience troubleshooting real production issues and seeing them through to resolution
  • Ability to work from design through to deployment and support
  • Comfortable identifying risks and making decisions without constant direction
  • Experience with automation, scripting, or infrastructure tools is a strong plus

Employment benefits

  • 12-month contract with 2 x 12-month extension options
  • Work on systems that directly support national security outcomes
  • Exposure to highly secure, complex environments most engineers don't get access to
  • Opportunity to deepen your experience in Defence and intelligence infrastructure
  • Clear pathway into longer-term Defence or cleared roles
  • Location: RAAF Edinburgh, SA
  • Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
  • Level: APS6 equivalent
  • Suitable candidates must complete ASD's Organisation Suitability Assessment (OSA) prior to commencement
  • A merit pool may be created if immediate placement is not available

Diversity and Inclusion

We're building teams that reflect a range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. If you meet most of the requirements, it's worth applying.

Veterans

Defence and Federal Government experience is highly valued. Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply - your background translates well into this environment.
