AI/ML Engineer - NV1 Cleared | Long-Term Defence Contract
Location: Adelaide, SA (Onsite)
Clearance: NV1 or higher (Australian Citizens only)
Engagement Type: Contract
Cleared Recruitment are currently seeking NV1-cleared AI/ML Engineers for a long-term contract supporting a high-impact program within the defence and national security space.
This role involves close collaboration with Defence scientists, AI researchers, and platform engineers to design, build, and test scalable, deployable ML platforms and pipelines within secure ICT environments.
You'll play a key role in enabling artificial intelligence and data analytics capability, supporting projects that sit at the intersection of software engineering, infrastructure, and machine learning.

Background
Rapidly advancing technologies are changing the way warfare is conducted. In particular, the emergence and use of data and AI technologies will act as force multipliers and enablers, accelerating the speed of warfare and assisting human decision-making. In this context, the Australian Defence Organisation faces the challenge of building appropriate processes and tools to facilitate the effective and integrated organisational introduction of complex data platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) at scale. As one of a number of steps to address this challenge, Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) require the services of a platform development team to support the design, development and implementation of an AI delivery platform to foster collaborative research and accelerated delivery of AI. The expectation is that the final product will play an important role in informing the deployment of AI at scale within Defence. To succeed, the platform will provide the ability to, as code, configure and deploy a generic suite of integratable tools that can be customised for the diverse use cases required across Defence and include detailed documentation to support its use by different user types.

Required Skills:

  • Proven experience as a Machine Learning Engineer, MLOps Engineer, Software Engineer or Data Scientist

  • Proficiency in Python, including hands-on experience with ML libraries such as scikit-learn, XGBoost, PyTorch, or similar

  • Demonstrated experience deploying ML models into production environments

  • Familiarity with MLOps best practices and CI/CD principles for model lifecycle management

  • Strong understanding of containerisation, preferably with Docker and Kubernetes

  • Comfortable working in highly secure, collaborative, and compliance-driven environments

Location of Service Delivery

Owing to the ongoing requirement for technical access and technical capability development on Defence approved and accredited systems, office accommodation will be provided at DSTG Fairbairn (Canberra, ACT), Russell Offices (Canberra, ACT), and/or Edinburgh (Adelaide, SA), including access to computer networks, when required. Ad-hoc working from home arrangements are available as approved by the Commonwealth.

Security Requirements
The nominated personnel shall possess and maintain at minimum a personnel security clearance of NEGATIVE VETTING LEVEL 1 or 2, with preference for TOP SECRET POSITIVE VETTING personnel. Successfully engaged NV1 or 2 personnel should be willing to undertake TOP SECRET POSITIVE VETTING assessment(s) at the Commonwealth's request
