Application Architect

We're looking for an experienced Application Architect to support the design and delivery of secure, modern ICT systems for senior government officials. This role sits within a Defence environment and focuses on building and evolving application architectures that support complex, high-security mobility solutions.

You'll work under broad direction, leading solution design across applications, infrastructure and services, and making sure everything fits together cleanly, securely, and at scale.

About the organisation

This role supports work aligned with the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), a statutory agency within the Defence portfolio responsible for cyber security, intelligence and cyber operations in support of Australia's national interests.

Contract details

• RFQ Closing Date: 19/01/2026
• Start date: 1 April 2026
• Initial term: 12 months
• Extension options: Up to two 12-month extensions
• Hours: Up to 40 hours per week (maximum 1920 hours per year)
• Location: Canberra, ACT
• Work type: Onsite only
  • Work from home is not available
  • Interstate candidates cannot be accommodated
• Security clearance: TSPV required prior to commencement
• Citizenship: Australian citizen only
• Other requirements:
  • Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) must be completed before starting

What you'll be working on

This role supports the delivery of secure mobility solutions, including:

• Expansion of existing networks and computing systems
• Desktop delivery and VDI environments
• Complex gateway and secure access services
• Cloud-based services
• High-assurance mobility solutions for senior officials

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design of application and solution architectures across complex environments
• Provide technical guidance to ensure applications integrate cleanly with infrastructure and workflows
• Translate business requirements into clear technical specifications, working closely with stakeholders
• Design and support VDI-based application access models
• Monitor, test and support end-user applications, including performance tuning and optimisation
• Validate solution designs with business users, infrastructure teams and functional areas
• Identify architectural risks early and recommend alternative solutions or mitigation strategies
• Assess and manage change requests or deviations from agreed specifications
• Ensure technical strategies, policies, standards and security controls are applied correctly to meet delivery milestones

Essential experience

• Proven experience leading solution architecture development in complex environments
  (applications, infrastructure or functional domains)
• Strong background designing large or complex systems and managing design trade-offs
• Ability to balance functional and non-functional requirements, including performance and security
• Experience reviewing designs, managing architectural risk, and providing governance
• Comfortable working across business, technical and security stakeholders
• Strong documentation skills and experience producing technical plans and specifications
