Senior Satellite Communications Engineer

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is seeking a Senior Satellite Communications Engineer to support its Satellite Modernisation Project. This is a hands-on, technical role focused on upgrading and maintaining satellite communication systems, covering both legacy Geostationary Orbit (GEO) infrastructure and emerging Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) technologies.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including architecture, cyber assurance, and regional technical officers, to ensure reliable, secure, and high-performance satellite communications across DFAT Posts worldwide.

Contract details

• Closing Date: 09.01.2026
• Start date: 2 March 2026
• Initial term: 12 months
• Extension options: Up to two 12-month extensions
• Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
• Location: Canberra, ACT
• Work type: Onsite only (hybrid/remote not available)
• Security clearance: Must hold or be able to obtain Negative Vetting Level 2 (NV2)
• Experience level: Senior (EL1 equivalent)

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain satellite communications systems for both GEO and NGSO platforms
• Support high-level design activities and technical investigations
• Deploy and maintain satellite terminals across DFAT Posts
• Ensure high availability and resilient WAN connectivity through satellite-based solutions
• Produce high-quality technical documentation, including system designs and maintenance plans
• Collaborate with geographically dispersed teams to support secure, reliable communications
• Travel as required for system deployment, maintenance, and support

Essential experience

• 5+ years in satellite communications engineering, including GEO and NGSO systems
• Strong knowledge of RF and microwave communication systems, including design, testing, and optimisation
• Experience planning and implementing high-availability WAN services using satellite connectivity
• Skilled in producing high-quality technical documentation
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills across cross-functional and distributed teams
• Willingness to travel to remote DFAT Posts as required

Desirable experience

• Experience supporting government or defence satellite communications projects
• Ability to mentor or provide guidance to junior engineers or field technicians
