Clearance: Australian Citizen + Active Baseline Security Clearance
Contract Length: 12 months
Estimated Start: 23 February 2026
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday between 7am-7pm (excluding public holidays/shutdown periods)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Server Engineer (EL1 equivalent) to support a Darwin-based Defence organisation in delivering secure, stable and resilient server and virtualization environments. You will play a key role in the design, implementation and maintenance of Windows Server, Active Directory and VMware platforms, supporting a major migration into a new AD forest and contributing to mission-critical ICT and operational technology systems.

This role sits within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD)-Australia's foreign signals intelligence and cyber security agency-supporting essential national security capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain Windows Server and Active Directory environments, including supporting a high-availability migration to a new AD Forest.

• Design, implement and support VMware virtualisation infrastructure.

• Deliver security remediation and uplift aligned with ASD requirements and internal policies.

• Utilise monitoring, vulnerability and diagnostic tools to optimise server and virtualisation environments.

• Install, configure and maintain Windows Server OS and associated server hardware.

• Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues in collaboration with internal teams, clients and external vendors.

• Produce high-quality technical documentation, including architecture, configuration and as-built documentation.

• Work closely with multidisciplinary stakeholders across the organisation.

• Comply with organisational safety, environmental, quality and governance policies.

Essential Criteria

1. Demonstrated experience implementing and managing Windows Server and Active Directory in line with Microsoft and ASD best practices.

2. Proven experience delivering Active Directory migrations in high-availability environments.

3. Strong experience implementing and managing VMware virtualisation infrastructure in accordance with VMware and ASD guidelines.

4. High attention to detail, strong communication skills and demonstrated experience in producing quality technical documentation.

5. Ability to work consistently within organisational safety, environmental, quality and corporate values frameworks.

Desirable Criteria

• Understanding of ITIL frameworks.

• Familiarity with Operational Technology environments (e.g., SCADA, DCS, PLC).

• Relevant certifications such as AZ-800 / AZ-801, MCSA, MCSE, VCP-DCV or equivalents.
