Senior VMware Specialist (VMware SME)

Location: Canberra, ACT (Onsite)
Start Date: 2 March 2026
Contract Duration: 12 months + up to two 12-month extensions
Hours: Full-time, up to 40 hours per week
About the Role
Cleared have partnered with The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), within the Department of Defence who is seeking an experienced Senior VMware Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support the delivery, operation, and continuous improvement of secure, scalable, and resilient on-premise infrastructure platforms.
In this role, you will be responsible for administering, troubleshooting, and optimising VMware-based environments to ensure high availability, performance, and security. You will also contribute to the design and implementation of infrastructure solutions that support strategic technology outcomes, with a strong focus on automation and operational efficiency.
This is a senior, hands-on technical role working onsite in Canberra. Interstate-based candidates cannot be accommodated.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver, administer, and maintain on-premise VMware platforms
Troubleshoot and resolve complex infrastructure and system issues
Monitor system performance, security events, and capacity
Implement automation for routine administration and operational tasks
Plan and execute infrastructure upgrades and maintenance activities
Maintain accurate operational documentation and procedures
Identify and implement opportunities to improve platform capability, stability, and efficiency
Technical Skills & Experience
Essential:
5-10 years' experience with VMware and related infrastructure technologies
Strong expertise in on-premise infrastructure environments
Proven ability to manage and support complex enterprise systems
Desirable:
Experience with automation tools and scripting
Familiarity with risk management, security compliance, and best practices
Security & Suitability Requirements
AGSVA Top Secret Positive Vetting (TSPV) clearance is required
Candidates must already hold a current TSPV; upgrades will not be sponsored
Candidates must be willing to undergo ASD's Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA)
This includes a psychological assessment (questionnaire and interview)
Topics may include personal relationships, living circumstances, values, financial situation, health history (including substance use), and any civil or military records
Working Arrangements
Onsite work in ACT
Full-time, 5 days per week
Limited work-from-home arrangements may be available in line with ASD's Flexible Hub policy
