Accessibility Specialists requires a strong understanding of design (including Inclusive Design), User Experience, Accessibility and WCAG best practice. They work with business and ICT to design strong, inclusive and accessible user experiences. They also undertake Accessibility Assessments of solutions under development, in testing, and/or in production - providing reports of findings to stakeholders, and support for developers working to fix issues identified.
As part of the Connection, Identity, and Authentication Branch, Accessibility Specialists are tasked with offering expert advice on accessibility and inclusive design and developing innovative solutions for Services Australia's digital platforms. The team is pivotal in creating new designs and has significantly contributed to the design and development of applications for both customers and third parties.
Key responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Providing guidance on Inclusive Design, Accessibility, and WCAG for business and ICT solutions and documentation throughout the project lifecycle to ensure the proper development of digital products.
- Collaborating with user experience and interface designers to ensure that designs fulfill user and business requirements and comply with relevant Inclusive Design, Accessibility, and WCAG standards.
- Conducting accessibility assessments of prototypes, PIT/SIT, and production versions of services, and delivering reports to agency teams with insights and recommendations to assist developers in creating solutions or addressing issues.
- Promoting awareness and enhancing the capability of Inclusive Design, Accessibility, and WCAG within projects and across the agency.
- Maintaining and updating accessibility practices and documentation.
- Having a solid understanding of HTML/CSS.
- Building relationships, collaborating effectively, and communicating persuasively to support the agency's transformation goals.
Essential knowledge, skills, systems, and tools for the role include:
- Screen Reader software (e.g., NVDA, JAWS)
- Text-to-Speech Software (e.g., DRAGON)
- Accessibility Testing Tools (e.g., WAVE)
- Axe DevTools
- Color Contrast Tools
- JIRA/GitLab
**Mandatory Criteria:**
- At least 2 years of proven experience as an Accessibility Specialist.
- Demonstrated advanced expertise in performing accessibility assessments and reviews across various platforms, adhering to WCAG standards.
**Weighted Criteria:**
- Relevant skills, whether gained through experience or formal training, to effectively work as an embedded Accessibility Specialist within a multidisciplinary team using Agile methodology.
Experience in using Accessibility Testing and Evaluation Tools such as Screen Readers, Colour Contrast Analyser and Developer Tools
