Senior Infrastructure / Unified Communications Engineer
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is seeking a Senior Unified Communications Engineer to support its Telecommunications and Data Centre Support Section. This role focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining DFAT's Unified Communications (UC) systems, ensuring secure, scalable, and reliable collaboration across telephony, messaging, desktop and softphones, mobile devices, PBX systems, and video conferencing environments.
You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including architecture, cybersecurity, and infrastructure teams, contributing to both operational support and ongoing projects across DFAT's wide area networks and data centres.
Contract details
- Closing Date: 9th January 2026
- Start date: 2nd March 2026
- Initial term: 12 months
- Extension options: Up to two 12-month extensions
- Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
- Location: Canberra, ACT
- Work type: Hybrid (full-time onsite at 51 Allara St, with ad-hoc work-from-home at DFAT's discretion)
- Security clearance: Must hold or be able to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1)
Key responsibilities
- Identify business needs and document functional and technical requirements for hardware, workflows, and operating systems
- Serve as the primary technical contact for UC solution design and implementation
- Develop UC roadmaps in collaboration with internal stakeholders
- Maintain and support UC systems, including voice, video, collaboration platforms, and mobile devices
- Create and maintain policies, procedures, and training plans for UC system administration
- Research emerging technologies to inform procurement and system development
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure architectural alignment and consistent security practices
- Provide technical guidance and support for UC system upgrades
- Contribute to operational strategies to improve system performance and reliability
Essential experience
- 10+ years designing, deploying, and managing UC systems
- Strong stakeholder management and client service skills
- Ability to create detailed technical designs and implementation plans
- Highly developed diagnostic and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Desirable experience
- Broad understanding of industry trends, government direction, and emerging technologies
- Hands-on experience operating UC systems, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimising voice, video, and VoIP systems
- Knowledge of ASD Essential 8 and experience contributing to security accreditation of ICT systems
- Familiarity with current and emerging networking and collaboration technologies
